Groundworks for Garden Projects

Most garden groundworks come down to three jobs: excavation, levelling, and sub-base preparation. Excavation is digging out the existing surface to the depth a new patio, driveway, deck, or shed base needs underneath it. Levelling is shaping the ground so the finished surface sits flat, with the right falls for water to drain off properly rather than pooling.

Sub-base prep is laying and compacting the hardcore underneath the surface that goes on top, in passes and at the right thickness for what the finished surface will carry. A driveway needs more than a path. A shed base needs less than a hot tub base. Most groundworks failures we see come from skipped compaction or insufficient sub-base depth, and that's where we don't cut corners.

Mini-Digger Work with Operator

For anything beyond a small hand-dig, we bring a mini-digger to site. Glen drives the digger himself, with a colleague on the controls when a second operator is needed. The capacity to operate the machinery ourselves means we're not paying a digger driver day rate on top of the job, and we know exactly what depth and level we're working to without translating through someone else.

We don't hire diggers out without an operator. The digger comes with one of us on it, every time. For bigger or more specialist groundworks jobs that need more capacity than our mini-digger handles, we have trusted contacts we've worked with for years and we'll bring in the right people rather than overstretching what we do ourselves.

When Do I Need Groundworks vs Just Landscaping?

Groundworks is the underground half of a landscaping project. Most full garden makeovers include some groundworks as part of the wider build, so if you're after a complete garden transformation our landscaping page is the better starting point. The build comes with the groundworks built in.

Where groundworks stands on its own is for jobs where the underground work is the project rather than a stage in something larger. A concrete shed base for a new garden building. A levelled hardstanding for a log cabin. Sub-base prep for a deck someone else is building on top. Or excavation and levelling work to make the garden buildable in the first place. That's where you'd hire a groundworker rather than a landscaper.

Groundworks Across West London

We carry out groundworks across Uxbridge, West London, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, and Hertfordshire, including Ealing, Chiswick, Hammersmith, Holland Park, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, and the surrounding areas.

How Much Does a Small Groundworks Job Cost?

Groundworks pricing depends on the volume of soil being moved, the access for the digger, and what's coming out and going back in. A small concrete shed base on an accessible garden runs at the lower end. A larger excavation on a sloping or awkward site, with significant spoil to remove, sits higher.

As with our other services, we don't quote groundworks without seeing the site. Spoil removal often runs through our own grab hire service on smaller jobs, which keeps the disposal cost predictable. We'll give you a quote that breaks down the digger time, the materials, and the disposal so you can see exactly where the cost sits.

Concrete Bases for Sheds, Log Cabins, and Outdoor Structures

A proper concrete base is the difference between a shed, log cabin, or pergola that lasts thirty years and one that starts settling within five. We pour bases for sheds, log cabins, summerhouses, garden offices, pergolas, and other outdoor structures, with the right depth, the right reinforcement, and the right finish for what's going on top.

For raised decks and load-bearing platforms see our decking page: the concrete base for that work goes in here, the deck on top is built there. For patios and driveways the sub-base goes in as part of the install rather than as a separate groundworks job. The through-line is that whatever's on top, the foundation underneath it has to be right.

Tell us what you're building and we'll come and look at the site. We'll talk through access for the digger, what spoil needs to come out, and what base or sub-base you actually need underneath the finished structure. Quote in writing, no obligation.
