Patio Materials We Install

We work with all the main paving materials and we'll talk you through the trade-offs honestly. Block paving is the most forgiving and the most flexible on price, with patterns from herringbone to stretcher bond to give a patio its own character. Indian sandstone is the mid-range workhorse: warm natural tones, riven or smooth finish, hard-wearing, and comfortably the most popular patio material in UK gardens for good reason.

Porcelain is the higher-end option. It costs more per square metre but stays cleaner, resists stains and moss, and gives a precise, modern look that works well with newer extensions and contemporary garden design. Natural stone, granite, and slate sit alongside these for clients who want something distinctive. We'll bring samples on the site visit so you can see how the options sit against your property and the rest of your garden before you commit.

Sub-Base, Drainage, and the Groundwork That Matters

Almost every patio that fails does so because the groundwork underneath wasn't done properly. We dig out to a proper depth, lay a compacted hardcore sub-base, and bed the slabs on the appropriate mortar mix for the material. Cutting corners on the sub-base saves a couple of days on the job and costs you the whole patio within a few years. We don't do that.

Drainage is the other half of the equation. As part of every patio job we install the drainage the surface actually needs: channel drains where the patio meets the house or a slope, and soakaways where surface water needs somewhere to go. These aren't optional extras, they're how a patio handles UK rainfall without flooding back towards the house or pooling in the middle. The cost is built into the quote.

How Much Does a New Patio Cost?

Patio cost depends on the size, the material, the access, and what's underneath the existing surface. As a rough guide, a small patio in good-quality Indian sandstone with proper groundwork tends to come in lower per square metre than the equivalent in porcelain. Block paving is usually the most affordable per square metre, while porcelain and natural stone sit at the top of the range. We don't quote sight unseen because the variables matter.

What we will tell you is what's included. Every quote we give for a patio covers the excavation, the sub-base, the bedding, the slabs, the drainage, and the disposal of the spoil. There are no extras dropped on the bill at the end for things that should have been there from the start. The quote you sign is the price you pay.

Patio Installation Across West London and the Home Counties

We install patios across Uxbridge, West London, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, and Hertfordshire, including Ealing, Chiswick, Hammersmith, Holland Park, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, and the surrounding towns and villages. From small terrace patios to full back-garden re-paves, the same approach applies.

How Long Does a Patio Installation Take?

A typical small to medium patio takes us between three days and a full working week, depending on size, access, and the state of the ground we're working with. The first day is excavation and removing the old surface. The next day or two is the sub-base and drainage. Then the slabs go down, get pointed, and we clean the site up.

Bigger jobs, awkward access, or sites that need significant levelling will take longer. We'll give you a realistic start-to-finish timeline in the quote so you can plan around it, and we work to that timeline. If anything changes during the job, you hear about it the same day, not at the end.

Garden Paths, Steps, and the Wider Garden

Garden paths are the same install as a patio, just laid in a longer, narrower shape. The materials, the sub-base, and the drainage all work the same way. If you're installing a patio and want a path running off it to a shed, side gate, or greenhouse, it usually makes sense to do both at the same time rather than as separate jobs.

Steps, retaining edges, and integration with the wider garden layout are part of how we plan a patio job. If you're thinking about a bigger garden project where the patio is one piece of the puzzle, see our landscaping page for how we handle full garden builds. And once the patio is in, our jet washing service keeps it looking new for years.
